Starting with weight loss medicine is the first step towards taking control of your weight. It’s not a quick fix – there is no quick fix to losing weight and keeping it off. It will take time and you must be prepared to persevere.
The most interesting results from clinical trials
Everyone’s experience is different – but the results of clinical trials may tell you something about what to expect.
In a clinical trial, two groups were compared: One group took weight loss medicine in addition to a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity, while the other group only had a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The group that took weight loss medicine lost 6 times more weight than those that did not.
In the trial, subjects who reduced their calorie intake and increased their physical activity lost an average of 2.4% of their body weight, while those who added weight loss medicine to a healthy diet lost 15% of their body weight. They were able to keep the weight off for 16 months with weight loss medicine and we all know how difficult it can be to stick to a healthy diet plan and maintain the new weight after losing weight.
In the trial, the average starting weight was ~105 kg. The subjects who received weight loss medicine had a weight loss of 16 kg and a reduction in their waist measurement of 13.5 cm.
What can these experiences mean to you?
With weight loss medicine, you will not only lose more weight than if you had only made lifestyle changes alone. It will also help you not to gain weight again.
In another trial, all were given weight loss medicine combined with low-calorie meals and increased physical activity for 20 weeks. These people did not have type 2 diabetes and either had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher or of 27 to 30 with at least 1 weight-related complication.
The most interesting results from clinical trials
After 20 weeks, the patients who reached the full dose of 2.4 mg were randomly divided into 2 groups and continued in the trial for another 48 weeks. Both groups maintained a reduced caloric intake and increased physical activity, but in one group the patients received a placebo and in the other group the patients continued to take weight loss medicine. Those who stopped taking weight loss medicine regained weight, while those who continued weight loss medicine continued to lose weight (17% weight loss over the full 68 weeks).
